For years, I thought I had insomnia.

I could fall asleep just fine. In fact, some nights I slept deeply for the first few hours. But almost every night, somewhere between 2 and 4am, I would wake up.

Wide awake.

Sometimes I was drenched in sweat.

Sometimes I wasn't.

Sometimes my heart was racing. Sometimes my mind was.

Sometimes I felt hot. Sometimes I felt perfectly comfortable and still couldn't understand why I was suddenly staring at the ceiling.

And almost every time, I'd look at the clock and see the same thing:

3:07am.

Again.

If you're in perimenopause or menopause, chances are you've had your own version of this experience.

You've probably tried magnesium, melatonin, cooling pillows, white noise, blackout curtains, herbal teas, meditation apps, and maybe a few things you found during a late-night Google search.

You may have even been told it's stress.

Or anxiety.

Or simply a normal part of aging.

But what if the thing waking you up isn't what you think?

 

The Biggest Sleep Myth Women Are Being Sold

Most women think they're waking up because they're hot.

I did too.

But after years of research, textile development, and speaking with experts in sleep and menopause, I came to a different conclusion:

Many women aren't waking up because they're hot. They're waking up because their temperature changed.

That distinction matters.

Because by the time you feel hot, the disruption may have already happened.

Your brain has already noticed the temperature fluctuation.

Your sleep cycle has already been interrupted.

You're already awake.

The heat isn't necessarily causing the awakening.

The heat may be the evidence that it already occurred.

 

Your Body Is Running a Nightly Thermostat War

Sleep and body temperature are deeply connected.

In fact, your core body temperature naturally drops as you fall asleep. That cooling process is one of the signals that helps initiate sleep in the first place.

Throughout the night, your body continues making precise temperature adjustments that work in coordination with your sleep cycles.

Under normal circumstances, you never notice.

But during perimenopause and menopause, things get more complicated.

Estrogen helps regulate the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for temperature control. As estrogen levels fluctuate, your body's thermostat can become more sensitive.

Suddenly, temperature changes that once passed unnoticed become significant enough for your brain to react.

That's why some women experience hot flashes.

It's why others experience night sweats.

And it's why many women wake up night after night without understanding what's pulling them out of sleep.

The issue isn't simply being too warm.

The issue is temperature instability.

 

Why Is It Always Around 3am?

One of the questions I hear most often is:

"Why do I keep waking up around 3am?"

The answer isn't completely understood, but we do know a few things.

In the second half of the night, your body is actively regulating temperature while spending more time in lighter stages of sleep.

You're closer to the surface.

Easier to wake.

When hormonal fluctuations, temperature dysregulation, and lighter sleep stages collide, you get the perfect recipe for those frustrating middle-of-the-night awakenings.

For many women, that moment happens somewhere between 2 and 4am.

Night after night.

 

The Sleep Industry Has Been Focused on Cooling

And this is where things get really interesting.

For years, the sleep industry has marketed cooling as the solution.

Cooling sheets.

Cooling mattress pads.

Cooling pillows.

Cooling pajamas.

The assumption is simple:

You're hot.

Therefore, you need cooling.

But cooling and thermoregulation are not the same thing.

Cooling is reactive.

Thermoregulation is proactive.

Cooling fabrics move heat away from the body after you're already warm.

After the temperature change has occurred.

After your brain has already noticed it.

Thermoregulating materials are designed to help buffer temperature fluctuations before they become disruptive.

And for women experiencing hormonal temperature swings, that's a fundamentally different approach.

Because the goal isn't simply to make you feel cooler.

The goal is to create greater stability.

 

The Technology Was Inspired by a Problem Much Bigger Than Sleep

Here's the fascinating part.

The textile technology that first made me rethink sleepwear wasn't originally developed for menopause.

It wasn't even developed for sleep.

The early work behind modern phase-change textile technology was advanced through efforts to help astronauts manage extreme temperature swings in space.

Engineers needed materials that could absorb excess heat, store it, and release it back when temperatures dropped.

Instead of simply creating a cooling sensation, these materials helped maintain a more stable microclimate around the body.

That concept eventually made its way into textiles through phase-change materials, or PCMs.

And when I first learned how they worked, a lightbulb went off.

Because women experiencing hormonal temperature dysregulation don't necessarily need to be colder.

And it requires a completely different solution.

The sleep industry spends billions talking about mattresses, pillows, and sheets.

Those things matter.

But there's one layer that sits against your skin for eight hours every night.

Your sleepwear.

And surprisingly little innovation has been focused there.

That realization ultimately became the foundation for Yomisma.

  • Talk with your healthcare provider about hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options

Most importantly, understand what may actually be happening.

Because once you recognize that the issue may be temperature dysregulation—not simply insomnia—you can start looking for solutions that address the cause instead of just the symptoms.
