What Is a Sleep Study — And Why Yomisma Is Running One?

Here is something that should surprise you: no peer-reviewed sleep study has ever been completed and published specifically for sleepwear in the perimenopause and menopause category. Not one.

The sleep industry generates billions of dollars in revenue every year. Brands make claims about temperature regulation, moisture management, and recovery. And yet no one has done the work to prove what actually happens to a woman's sleep when you address the biology at the fiber level.

That's the gap Yomisma is stepping into. And we're doing something about it.

What Is a Wearable Sleep Study?

A wearable sleep study is exactly what it sounds like — a structured research protocol in which participants wear a specific garment or device during sleep while biometric data is tracked and recorded and supplemental questions are asked.

Unlike a traditional sleep lab study, a wearable study happens in your own home, in your own bed, in your natural sleep environment. That matters. Sleep lab studies are notoriously difficult to reproduce in real-world conditions. Your sleep in a lab is not your sleep at home. Wearable studies close that gap.

Modern wearable technology has made this kind of research increasingly rigorous. Devices like the Oura Ring can track a comprehensive range of sleep metrics in real time — sleep quality, sleep stages, respiratory rate, HRV and more — with a level of accuracy that was simply not available to researchers even a decade ago.


Why Sleep Research for Women in Perimenopause Matters

Women in perimenopause and menopause experience some of the most significant sleep disruptions of their lives. And did you know that it is estimated that 75-80% of nighttime awakenings are caused by a fluctuation in your body temperature? Night sweats. Early morning cortisol surges. Thermoregulatory misfiring. REM disruption. Changes to sleep architecture that compound over time.

And yet this population has been almost entirely absent from sleepwear research. The few studies that exist on sleep and menopause focus on pharmacological interventions — hormone therapy, sleep aids, supplements. The role of the textile environment — what a woman is actually wearing against her skin for eight hours a night — has never been seriously examined.

This is not a minor oversight. The layer closest to your body all night is the single most immediate variable in your sleep environment. It affects your skin temperature, your moisture levels, your comfort, and potentially your body's ability to regulate itself through the night. Ignoring it isn't rigorous science. It's a blind spot.

What Yomisma Is Building

We are developing a structured sleep study specifically designed to evaluate the performance of our proprietary TriVara™ textile system in real women during real sleep.

We are not going to share every detail of the study design here — we're still building the framework, and we want to get it right before we talk about it in full. What we can tell you is this:

The study will focus on women in perimenopause and menopause. It will use wearable biometric tracking. It will include some self-reporting. It will measure outcomes across multiple domains. And it will be the first study of its kind in this category.

We believe the data will be meaningful. We believe it will shape not just Yomisma's product development but the broader conversation about women's sleep health and what the textile industry owes the women it's been serving inadequately for decades.


Why This Matters Beyond Yomisma

The menopause market is the fastest growing segment in women's health. 50 million women in the US alone are navigating perimenopause or menopause right now. That number will only grow.

These women are educated. They are skeptical of wellness claims that aren't backed by evidence — and they should be. They have been sold bamboo and called it a solution. They have been handed melatonin and told to sleep better. They deserve more than marketing language dressed up in wellness language.

Clinical validation is how brands earn trust in this space. It is how we demonstrate that TriVara™ does what we say it does — not because we say so, but because real women sleeping in it produced real data that shows it.

That's what this study is about.
